Historical Event on 10/1/1932
Indian Milatary Academy became functional with Brigadier LP Collins, DSO, OBE as the Commandant. The first course of 40 GCs had on its rolls Sam Manekshaw, Smith Dun and Mohd Musa, later to be Chiefs of the armies of their respective countries, i.e. India, Burma (now Myanmar) and Pakistan. This training was for a period of two and a half years.

8/7/1925	Monkombu Sambasivan Swaminathan was born in Kumbakonam. He went to Britain and took his Ph.D from the school of Agriculture in Cambridge in 1952. He developed high yielding strains of wheat and rice and accomplished difficult crosses in potato and jute species. In 1971, he was awarded The Ramon Magsaysay Award for generating a new confidence in the agricultural capabilities of the country. He was the Director of the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines. He is also the first agriculture scientist to win the Albert Einstein world science Award in 1986.
7/4/1729	Kanhoji Angre, former Chief of Navy in Maratha kingdom, died.
7/18/1908	Fourteen thousand mill workers go on strike at Bombay.
11/7/1995	India opens second consulate in UK in Glasgow (first being at Birmingham).
3/7/1961	Govind Ballabh Pant passed away. He had served eight years as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He was bestowed with Bharat Ratna in 1959.
6/5/1984	Operation 'Blue Star' was launched by Indira Gandhi. Indian commandos stormed into Sikh's holiest gurudwara Golden Temple in Amritsar to flush out the terrorists and other anti-government elements. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and over 325 people were killed in the temple. Thus a great rebel arose all over the nation and specially in Punjab.
3/31/1990	Bharat Ratna, India's highest award, was given to Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1841-1956) (Posthumous).
1/27/1988	The first ever helicopter mail service was inaugurated at Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The first flight was from Port Blair to Havelock Island and its inaugurated by the Governer of Andaman and Nicobar Island.
3/12/1988	After 58 years in the commemoration of Dandi March, Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi performed the 32 kms Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram.
2/1/1964	Unit Trust of India' established.
