I would not leave luggage in anything less than a 4-star hotel, and even then for not more than 2 nights somewhere else. Either take day trips from somewhere you can call "home", or take it with you, or pack very light. Packing light means less to lose anywhere you go - and vacations are most fun when you dont have that worry. Be sure to explore outside of Nice. We loved St. Jean cap Ferrat and Antibes, both pretty near to Nice. St. Tropez isnt far either. Have fun!
I would strongly suggest you take ALL your belongings with you where ever you go.Those lockers are subject to random inspection whether you like it ornnot.
